The game of chess holds a rich history to its name tracing back thousands of years. Chess originated in India becoming popular among nobility giving it the name "The Royal Game”. These days, it is HBR “Royals” who are checkmating their opponents.
For the past two years, the Hinckley Big-Rock High School Chess Team has opened their practices to HBRMS students who wish to participate. Last year, I took advantage of this. Going to chess practices helped me to improve my skills at the game and get to know some of the high schoolers.
While it was fun going to the high-school, I am excited to hear that chess club will once again be offered at HBRMS. Next year, Coach Chris Toman, from the High School Chess Team will be teaching chess club at the middle school. Keep an eye out for more details and consider participating next year.
The High-School Team has qualified for the IHSA State Chess Tournament for the last two years. The Chess Program at the middle school is the future!
